Rabat- Sub-Saharan migrants who have reportedly taken over apartments in Tangier received a 24-hour eviction notice from the Interior Ministry on Monday.

The migrants received an order from by the Interior Ministry to vacate apartments they illegally occupied following complaints from Moroccan owners in the Boukhalef neighborhood in Tangier.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that failure to vacate the buildings within the specified timeframe will result in the authorities being obliged to intervene in order to hand over the apartments to their owners in accordance with the law.

"Respect for private property is guaranteed by the law and public authorities shall enforce this law under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor," the Interior Ministry added.

Tension shook the Boukhalef neighborhood in 2014 following clashes between sub-Saharan migrants and local residents that left a Senegalese man dead and many others injured.

The local residents of the Boukhalef neighborhood accuse the sub-Saharan immigrants of "disturbing the peace, prostitution, public consumption of alcohol" and illegal occupation of homes.

According to reports, at least 500 apartments in the city of Tangier are illegally occupied by Sub-Saharan migrants, and each apartment houses up to twenty people.
