Rabat - Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel (right) has become the first EU leader and second leader in the world to marry his gay partner.
Bettel, 42, a center-right politician who became premier in 2013, married Gauthier Destenay, a Belgian architect, on Friday in a private ceremony at the country's capital.
This comes just months after the Roman Catholic duchy legalized gay unions.
Bettel is the first leader in the EU to wed a same-sex partner, and is only the second in the world after Iceland's Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir, who married her writer partner in 2010.
Luxembourg's parliament approved same-sex marriage in June 2014 and the first weddings took place on January 1, 2015.
