Rabat- Former Miss USA Rima Fakih has come under fire from social media users for tattooing verses of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, on her back, according to CNN Arabia.

A picture widely shared on social media shows the Lebanese-American actress wearing a backless dress with the tattoo on her back during her participation in season three of the Lebanese edition of "Dancing with the Stars".

The tattoo is a verse from the first surah (chapter) of the Quran, Al-Fatiha, which reads "Ihdina Siratal mustaqeem" in Arabic, or "Guide us on the straight path" in English.

Social media users deemed the tattoo as an insult to Islam and the Quran.

Fakih was the first Muslim Arab-American to be crowned Miss USA 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The beauty queen was born in Lebanon before moving with her family to the United States in 1993.
