Rabat- Seven million is the number of Moroccans who live with less than 20 Dirhams per day, while 3 millions of them suffer from malnutrition.
Legend has it that in Morocco nobody dies of starvation. However, and as shocking as it might seem, some Moroccans cannot find what to eat! The numbers reported by daily Al Massae in its Wednesday, January 29th issue, based on recent statistics provided by Amazing Maps website, reveal the daunting fact that vast portions of the Moroccan population are suffering from malnutrition.
The paper said that the numbers do not point toward a looming danger of famine, yet if this indicator is not so critical, it remains below the global standard, or 2000 calories a day necessary for the human body to function properly throughout the day.
The same source went on to add that it is a situation of extreme poverty knowing that 7 million of Moroccans earn just 20 Dirhams per day or even less.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released a report suggesting that the number of Moroccans who suffer from malnutrition has declined sharply in recent years to reach 5.5%. But Amazing Maps’ recent statistics suggest that the number is 9%, according to the Moroccan newspaper.
Amazing Maps’ figures make it clear that poverty is still gaining ground in Morocco especially in rural areas.
In a recent report about Social Safety nets in the MENA region, the World Bank pointed out “10 percent of Moroccans, have per capita consumption levels that are no more than US$0.50 per day above the US$2 per day poverty line. »
In spite of all these figures, the Government has made a habit of challenging the conclusions of international surveys and dismisses them as both “inaccurate and groundless.”
