Obama welcomes King’s invitation to visit Morocco: statement

New York- US President Barack Obama thanked King Mohammed VI for his invitation to visit Morocco, said the joint statement issued following the meeting between the two heads of state.

“The President thanked His Majesty the King for his invitation to visit Morocco,” said the statement.

“President Obama and King Mohammed VI reaffirmed their commitment to stay in close contact and to continue on a path of increased cooperation that will strengthen the United States-Morocco strategic partnership, including the next meeting of the U.S.-Morocco Strategic Dialogue in Rabat,” it added.

The meeting between President Obama and King Mohammed constitutes a landmark in the relations between the two allies, as the American President pledged to continue supporting efforts o "find a peaceful, sustainable, mutually agreed-upon solution to the Western Sahara question.”

Just before the meeting, the White House said that the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara is “serious, realistic and credible.”

“Morocco’s autonomy plan is serious, realistic and credible,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

“It represents a potential approach that can satisfy the aspirations of the people in the Western Sahara to run their own affairs in peace and dignity.”
