Moroccan Justice Minister, Mustapha Ramid

Rabat - Moroccan Justice Minister, Mustapha Ramid, responded to activists seeking to repeal article 222 which imprisons for up to six months people who break the fast in public place during Ramadan.

Speaking at a forum organized by French-speaking daily newspaper L'Economiste on Tuesday, Ramid implied that the majority of Moroccans will turn against those who break the fast in public during the month of Ramadan.

"Whoever wants to break the fast in public should do it in Mohammed V Avenue [in Rabat]," the Minister said. "We will see what will happen to him."

The PJD-affiliated minister said that the Moroccan society is not yet ready to accept those who break the fast in public during the holy month of Ramadan. "Even those who consume alcoholic beverages outside of Ramadan defend fasting," he added.

During a meeting held on April 20, Mustapha Ramid expressed his refusal to amend the article of the penal code that criminalizes public rupture of the fast during Ramadan.

"Everything is likely to be amended except articles concerning the criminalization of sex outside of marriage and public breaking of the fast (...) These are two attacks on Islam in the land of the Commander of the Faithful," Ramid said.

Article 222 of Morocco’s penal code states that anyone “breaking the fast in public place during Ramadan, without a reason accepted in Islam, can be imprisoned for up to six months and fined.
