Morocco Arrests Two People for Brutally Assaulting a Gay Man

Rabat - Two men who allegedly attacked a man they perceived as gay have been arrested by Moroccan police.

A police statement said on Wednesday that two assailants in their thirties who allegedly attacked a young man because of his sexual orientation have been arrested.

The assault took place on Monday, May 29th in the street of Hassan II in Fez.

The young man, dressed in women’s clothing, was beaten brutally and booed by dozens of angry men while hurling anti-gay slurs.

Authorities said they are still looking for other suspects.

The Public Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance of Fez said on Tuesday that his office had opened an investigation into the matter, pledging to identify perpetrators and bring them to justice.

"Every person who violates the rule of law and encroaches on the powers of the state will be dealt with appropriately. The state has the exclusive right to punish those who violate the law," the Public Prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The attack has created uproar on social media, with many Moroccans calling on the government to ensure the safety of citizens regardless of their orientation and choice of lifestyle.

Others condemned the violence against the man and called for the perpetrators of the attack to be punished.
