Rabat - The Public Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance of Fez said in a communique issued on Tuesday that his office would open an investigation into the incident that occurred last night in the country’s spiritual capital, when dozens of angry people savagely attacked a gay man getting out of a taxi.
“The Public Prosecutor has ordered the opening of a probe to identify people involved in the assault and bring them to justice,” said the communique, which was obtained by Morocco World News.
“Every person who violates the rule of law and encroaches on the powers of the state will be dealt with appropriately. The state has the exclusive right to punish those who violate the law,” it added.
A shocking video posted on Tuesday morning on YouTube shows an angry mob brutally assaulting a gay man, who appeared to be dressed in women’s clothes.
The assault created an uproar on social media, with many Moroccans condemning the attack and calling on the government to act swiftly to impose the respect for the rule of law and the safety of citizens.
