Rabat - Al Jazeera said on Monday that German authorities had released journalist Ahmed Mansour, Reuters reported.

The Doha-based network said Germany's public prosecutor had decided to release Mansour, who works for the network's Arabic-language service, without charges.

German Foreign Ministry said on Monday that no one would be extradited from Germany if they faced the death penalty.

"I don't think one can say this loudly enough: Of course, nobody will be extradited from Germany who risks being sentenced to death abroad," spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry Martin Schaefer told a news conference on Monday.

Ahmed Mansour, who has dual British and Egyptian citizenships, was arrested in Berlin on Saturday at Egypt's request.

An Egyptian court sentenced Ahmed Mansour to 15 years in prison in absentia last year on torture charges. He is accused of taking part in the torture of a lawyer in Cairo's Tahrir Square in 2011, during protests against toppled president Hosni Mubarak.

Protesters gathered outside the German prison in which he was being held and called for his immediate release.
