Rabat - Moroccan soldiers and Gendarmerie have been told to stop using social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter out of concern they may unintentionally disclose confidential information, daily newspaper Al Massae reported.

Commander of the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie, Hosni Benslimane, and Bouchaib Arroub, General Inspector of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), issued strict instructions to the rest of the military and Gendarmerie, asking them to refrain from using social media after senior officials ruled it could lead to a security breach.

The same source added that those who wish to use social media should ask permission of their superiors before doing so. It is also believed that the Army and the Royal Gendarmerie want to stop their personnel from using Facebook and the like to discuss social demands such as raising wages and better work conditions.

According to the Arabic-speaking daily newspaper, the ban stems from fears that confidential information may be placed in the public domain. This is also comes after some soldiers and Gendarmerie inadvertently published on their social media accounts highly sensitive information on sophisticated weaponry acquired by Morocco.
