Rabat - Polisario militiamen who fought alongside Muamar Gaddafi during the latter's government crackdown on protestors in 2011 are believed to be responsible for the bombing attack at the Moroccan embassy in Libya earlier this week.

According to daily newspaper Al Sabah, preliminary conclusions of an investigation into the attack have revealed that former members of a Polisario militia codenamed "Sakia el Hamra and Oued Eddahab Office" might be involved in the bombing.

The same source said the Polisario militiamen were called to fight alongside the special forces of former dictator Muamar Gaddafi in the wake of a massive wave of protests that engulfed the country in 2011.

They are believed to exert great influence on the armed militias that control the neighborhoods surrounding the Moroccan embassy in Tripoli, the newspaper added.

The Polisario-linked militia is also believed to be well-financed and heavily armed. They have large sums of money and sufficient quantities of arms and ammunition inherited from the time when they were fighting in the ranks of Muamar Gaddafi forces, Al Sabah said.

On Monday, April 13th, the main gate of the Moroccan embassy in Tripoli was targeted by a bomb attack that exploded without claiming victims but left material damage in neighboring buildings.

Morocco had strongly condemned the terrorist attack targeting its embassy in Tripoli and called on Libyan authorities to open an investigation into the matter.

Libya’s General National Congress (GNC) on Wednesday also strongly condemned the terrorist attack against Morocco’s embassy in Tripoli, deeming it a “criminal act”.

The General National Congress will monitor the investigations conducted by the security apparatus of the “Government of National Salvation” aimed at “identifying the perpetrators and the parties behind this criminal act”, the GNC said in a statement.
