Senegal’s President Asks Morocco to Train Senegalese Imams

Rabat - President of Senegal, Macky Sall has asked for Morocco's help with the training of imams in his country in light of the growing threats of extremism and terrorism in the region.

The Senegalese President made the request during talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar on Monday in the capital Dakar.

"Morocco's help in the training of Senegalese Imams to fight against extremism would contribute in promoting the values of tolerance inspired from the Maliki school of Sunni Islam," Macky Sall said during the meeting.

The Senegalese President also expressed his country's desire to benefit from Moroccan expertise in the fields of transportation, agriculture, tourism, banking and finances.

This is not the first time Morocco receives requests from foreign countries to train religious preachers and Imams in the teachings of tolerant Islam.

Mali, Kenya, France and now Guinea are among the countries that asked for Morocco's help with the training of Imams.

As part of its leading role in the fight against the extremist religious ideology that has emerged in Africa, Morocco has established a religious center in the capital Rabat to train Imams in accordance with the teaching of the Maliki school, one of the four major schools of Fiqh or religious law within Sunni Islam that is practiced in North Africa.
