Rabat - A man died on Friday few days after he set himself on fire outside the French consulate in the southern city of Agadir.
The man, Mustapha Riad, 47, self-immolated in Agadir in protest of the "lack of response to a request he submitted to obtain a visa."
According to media reports, the deceased, who had lived in France for 17 years but he no longer had a valid residence permit, submitted a visa application in mid-December.
The French embassy in Rabat said in a statement that the request was 'being investigated', adding that "the deadline for requesting the renewal of the residence permit had not been respected."
It added that "nearly 200,000" visas were issued each year by the French consular services to Moroccans.
The man passed away at 5:30 am in the Hassan II Hospital in Agadir.
