New York - After the tension sparked in recent days by Spanish actor Javier Bardem over an alleged embarrassing comment made by the French Ambassador to Paris regarding his country’s relations with Morocco, the spokesperson of the French Foreign Ministry, said that the Spanish actor had lied, adding that the French diplomat had never hold a meeting with him.

“I have already indicated that he had not met Mr. Bardem and, therefore, could not have made the statement attributed to him,” Romain Nadal, spokesperson of the French Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

There was no meeting between Ambassador Delattre and Mr. Bardem, which means that the words attributed to Mr. Delattre were not pronounced by him,” he added.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem, known for defending the Polisario and accusing Morocco of human rights abuses in the Sahara, caused a diplomatic crisis between Morocco and France.

Bardem told French media last week that during a meeting he had held with France’s Ambassador to Washington in 2011, the French diplomat had told him that “Morocco is a mistress who you sleep with every night, who you don’t particularly love but you have to defend.”

On Monday, the Moroccan government condemned in “the strongest terms,” the alleged demeaning expressions made by the Ambassador of France in Washington, adding that they were “scandalous and unacceptable.”
