Casablanca - Silvio Berlusconi’s “sex scandal” of 2010 is back in the limelight. The controversial facts that the Moroccan Minister of Public Service and Modernization of the Administration, Mohamed Moubdi, shared with Moroccan newspaper Al Akhbar last Monday regarding Berlusconi’s affair have reanimated the polemic.
However, on Tuesday, January 27, the Minister denied having shared any facts with Al Akhbar, which has stirred up even more controversy than the facts he was said to have shared with the Moroccan newspaper.
Whether Mr. Moubdi did or did not share the controversial facts about Berlusconi’s affair with Al Akhbar is now the question asked by many national and international news media.
However, an audio recording that has been recently going viral on Moroccan social networks confirms that Moubdi did share with Al Akhbar information about the Berlusconi scandal.
A Moroccan journalist, Bouchra Dou, recently shared an audio recorded interview with the Moroccan Civil Service Minister about Karima El Mahroug (a.k.a. Ruby) and her affair with Berlusconi.
Asked about whether he knows Karima El Mahroug, Mr. Moubdi answered, “Yes, I do. I signed her birth certificate when I was still the president of the municipal council in Fqih Ben Saleh [a town 200 kilometres from Casablanca].” “She used to live there with her family before they moved to Khribga (120 km southeast of Casablanca),” added Mr. Moubdi.
The Minister also told the interviewer that Karima was a normal girl like any other girl in Fqih Ben Saleh. No one paid any attention to her until the scandal with Berlusconi.
“She has not brought any disgrace upon Fiqih Ben Saleh or upon the people living there,” stated the Minister when asked about whether Karima’s affair with Berlusconi had brought any disgrace on the small city. “She has brought disgrace only upon herself.”
“She was absolutely not a minor when she had an affair with the Italian politician,” confirmed Mr. Moubdi.
The Minister also said that he had received a request form the Moroccan Consulate in Milan to send authentic copies from Karima’s civil profile. “I made sure to send the documents through diplomatic channels to ensure they would not be intercepted ,” he explained.
Asked about whether Berlusconi was the only one to blame for the scandal, Mr. Moubdi responded, “I think they both share the responsibility for their actions.”
“I’m also not immune from wrong deeds,” the Minister told Bouchra Dou, as she asked him for his opinion about the various scandals that influential Moroccan and international figures got involved in.
“However, I think that Morocco is a conservative society. We don’t have people that would dare to get involved in affairs as scandalous as the one Berlusconi had with Karima,” he further argued.
Bouchra Dou’s interview with Mohamed Moubdi clearly confirms the facts he shared with Al Akhbar newspaper on Monday. However, the day after the Minister he is reported to have denied having divulged any facts about Karima to the Moroccan daily.
“I don't know Ruby's birth date, I don't know Karima and I don't know when she met Berlusconi, or if she was an adult or a minor," Moubdi allegedly told Italian radio.
According to Italian press, Berlusconi’s defense requested that investigations be carried out concerning Moubdie’s controversial statements.
“It’s a story that should not be swept under the carpet, because Italians want to know the truth once and for all about this issue,” Souad Sbai, a former Italian lawmaker, told the Italian media.
However, the bulk of national and international media have already highlighted the question that Mr. Moubi’s statement to Al Akhbar raises of why would the Minister deny the next day that he had said anything about Karima Mahroug?
