Morocco's top business leader criticized the head of the government for "mishandling the economic crisis and for taking reform measures without consulting with the different stakeholders.
Ms. Meriem Bensalah, the President of the General Confederation of Companies in Morocco (known as the CGEM), has leveled sharp criticism against Benkirane’s government for its “mishandling “of the economic crisis as reported by the Moroccan daily Al Massae.
Ms. Bensalah revealed that the reforms were undertaken without consulting the main stakeholders, namely the CGEM and the private sector, which explains the inappropriateness and inapplicability of the measures issued.
In her address during the coordination council meeting that summoned the government and the CGEM last Friday, Ms. Bensalah asserted that the reverberations of the economic downturn are strongly felt in many economic sectors. She explained that Moroccan industrialists and business owners have noticed a sluggish industrial activity coupled with a significant loss of job opportunities.
Bensalah called on the government to enforce the recommendations reached within the government concerning the payment deadlines, the strike law and compensations for job loss.
In response to Bensalah’s statement, the head of government, Benkirane, confirmed that the current juncture is highly critical with regards to the economic crisis. By the same occasion he called all the partakers to engage in large reform projects so as to improve the performance of the national economy and to boost its competitiveness.
Benkirane also asserted that the government has launched a series of workshops in synergy with different partners. He added that the recommendations reached in these meetings have the potential to stimulate the private sector.
Benkirane also announced that the government intends to organize a conference on tax reforms. The recommendations reached during this conference would be used to inform the government on how to reform the apparatus used to levy and collect taxes.
By the same occasion, the government’s council also agreed on a number of measures to help simplify administrative procedures , especially in the setting up of companies, the transfer of property and tax payments.
