The National Assembly of the Istiqlal party has decided unanimously on Saturday to withdraw from the governmental coalition led by the party of Justice and Development (PJD).
870 members of the party’s national assembly from an overall of 976 voted in favor of the decision of the withdrawal after one year and a half of participating in the ruling coalition.
Mr. Adil Benhamza, the mouthpiece of the Istiqlal party, said in a statement that “the decision of leaving the government was a natural response for the absence of dialogue within the majority.”
“The party will raise a memorandum to the king in order to provide him with the necessary clarifications about the pulling out decision,” he added.
A concluding communiqué released by the national assembly stated that:
The party left no option unused and fulfilled all its obligations toward its allies and towards the critical juncture that the country witnesses.
The party sent a historical memorandum to the head of the governmental coalition but with no favorable response, and suggested true solutions to overcome the crisis but faced with an indifferent head of government who failed to enhance the performance of the ruling majority and its efficiency.”
Members of the IP national assembly said that the King is the one allowed to decide what to happen in the future, and that the head of government has the constitutional right of dissolving the parliament, and to call for early elections which they are ready to take.
They said that the party will abide by article 42 of the Moroccan constitution which states:
The King Head of State, His Supreme Representative, Symbol of the unity of the Nation, Guarantor of the permanence and of the continuity of the State and Supreme Arbiter between the institutions, sees to respect for the Constitution, to the good functioning of the constitutional institutions, to the protection of democratic choice and of the rights and freedoms of the citizens, of the collectivities, and to respect for the international commitments of the Kingdom.
