Quebec to prohibit citizens from wearing religious symbols in public spaces

Washington- Quebec is following in the footsteps of secular France by prohibiting citizens from wearing overt religious symbols in public spaces. The new Charter of Quebec Values’ objective is to sustain religious neutrality in Quebec public life.

The bill, proposed by the government of PM Pauline Marois, asserts that government employees are prohibited from wearing “overt and conspicuous” religious symbols—reports Canada’s National Post.

This includes everyone who falls under the blanket of government employee including judges, public bus drivers, day care workers, etc.

Additionally, the bill proposes to mandate that anyone providing or receiving state services must also comply. Particularly, the bill emphasizes that it is “mandatory to have one’s face uncovered while providing or receiving a state service.”

The new Quebec Charter of Values has been put forth for consideration by the National Assembly this fall, and will be Quebec’s first-ever Charter of Values.
