Iran and Morocco flgs

Rabat - Iran is reportedly seeking to strengthen ties with Morocco based on 'mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs of each country," according to Iranian news website PressTV.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Marzieh Afkham, said that her country is determined to "improve ties with Rabat in all fields."

Afkham said that steps have already been taken in this regard such as the reopening of Iran's embassy in Morocco and the appointment of a new ambassador to the kingdom.

She added that the two countries also seek to boost political and economic cooperation, and exchange commercial delegations.

Relations between Iran and Morocco were severed in 2009 following a series of disputes on regional issues, especially when an Iranian official described Bahrain as Iran's fourteenth province.

Morocco has also repeatedly accused Iran of seeking to spread Shia Islam in the country.

According to the same source, Iran officially appointed Mohammad Taqi Moayyed as its new ambassador to Morocco.

A career diplomat, Moayyed submitted his credentials to King Mohammed VI last week.

Morocco has not yet named any ambassador to Tehran. Moroccan officials have announced that a new diplomatic representative is to be named soon.
