Rabat - Fez, the country’s second largest city, will establish the first bioelectrical power plant in Morocco, costing about MAD 100 million.
The project, the first of its kind in Morocco, will transform household waste into biogas that will bring electricity to Fez. This bioelectric power plant already produces more than one megawatt, satisfying 30% of Fez’s needs of electricity. The new project would produce five Megawatts.
Fez is a pioneer in waste management. Since April 2014, the waste management sector in Fez has been managed by the American company “Ecomed for waste management” in collaboration with the municipality of Fez.
Together they have treated about 900 tons of households wastes on a daily basis. With this project, Fez will further become a worldwide pioneer in sustainable development in Morocco and Africa. Allal Amraoui, deputy of Fez’s mayor, praised this “impressing and creative” project that will enable the city to satisfy its needs.
This project would also help control “unpleasant odors, mosquitoes and microbes” that came from the former dump “Oudayas”. The budget needed for the equipment, a filling station and other energy recovery machines may go up to one million MAD.
Moroccan media have commented that this project had previously failed because of a dispute between Hamid Chabbat, Fez’s mayor, and the government over the paternity and the inauguration of this project.
