Rabat - More than half a million worshippers thronged the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca to attend Isha (evening) and Taraweeh (post-Isha) prayers led by Imam Omar Al Kazabri.
As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan got underway, hundreds of thousands of Moroccans from Casablanca and elsewhere perform Taraweeh prayers in the Hassan II Mosque, the largest mosque in Africa and the seventh largest in the world.
Every year, all the roads leading to the mosque become crowded and security personnel are being kept busy to facilitate the ease flow of worshippers heading for the mosque.
The holy fasting month of Ramadan this year runs through July 17. Worshippers across Morocco flock mosques to perform extra prayers called Taraweeh, during which excerpts of the Quran are recited.
Taraweeh means to rest and relax in Arabic. These special prayers, which are not compulsory, can last for over one hour and the number of Rakahs (movements and words followed by Muslims while performing prayers) can vary from one place to the other.
