Rabat- Bulgarian footballer Hristo Stoichkov has accused FIFA of acting like a mafia, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
"I said it back in 1994. It's the biggest mafia out there in the world of sports", the former Barcelona player said during a talk with a group of coaches in Sofia, Bulgaria.
"I refuse to accept the fact that some people can be at FIFA and UEFA for 20-30 years without being replaced. We change players, we change coaches, and yet those people are wearing the same suits at those organizations for over 20 years", Stoichkov said.
Stoichkov is regarded one of the best players of his generation. He was also named by Brazilian football legend Pele in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players.
The Ballon D'Or Winner insisted that FIFA and UEFA have done nothing for football and never consult players about their decisions. "I don't see a way of dismantling this mafia. They've arrested seven people, but the other 137 are still there", he added."They won't allow an outsider to become the FIFA president, Figo for example, because Blatter has 130 votes in his pocket", the 1994 World Cup top scorer said.
Stoichkov also criticized UEFA president Michel Platini: "He's only interested in staging as many Champions League and Europa League matches as possible. He wants there to be more clubs in the competitions so more money is made from broadcasting rights".
