FIFA President Sepp Blatter and South Africa’s President during 2010 World Cup in South Africa

Rabat- US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Wednesday that Corrupt FIFA officials took bribes during the process that awarded the 2010 edition of the World Cup to South Africa.

"Around 2004, bidding began for the opportunity to host the 2010 World Cup, which was ultimately awarded to South Africa, the first time the tournament would be held on the African continent," she was quoted by AFP as saying.

"But even for this historic event, FIFA executives and others corrupted the process by using bribes to influence the hosting decision," she added.

Jack Warner, former FIFA Vice-President and former President of CONCACAF was the mastermind of the scheme that allowed South Africa to be named host of the 2010 World Cup.

During the voting that was held in May 2004, South Africa won the right to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup after they beat Morocco 14-10 in the final vote, thus becoming the first African country to host the tournament.

Ever since, Morocco has always alleged that the voting process was marred by fraud.

Morocco was the first African country to present its bid to host the World Cup. Morocco made its first bid in the early 1990’s to host the 1994 edition of the football’s showpiece, which was eventually organized in the United States.
