Rabat - Morocco's needs of natural gas are estimated at about 5 billion cubic meters by 2025, said Abdelkader Amara, Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment.
According to Communication Minister and Government Spokesperson Mustapha El Khalfi, Amara presented to the government council on Thursday a presentation on the kingdom's liquefied natural gas plan (LNG).
Amara said that by expanding the use of natural gas, the government is planning to improve the country's energy mix alongside renewables.
The minister added that his department, in coordination with the National Office of Electricity and Water (ONEE) and the various stakeholders in the energy sector, have launched a debate seeking to increase the quota of natural gas in the national energy mix.
Introducing LNG in Morocco requires an investment of 4.6 billion dollars, to be mostly provided by national and foreign institutional and private investors.
The $4.6 billion will be spent on infrastructure, including the construction of an LNG terminal in Jorf Lasfar near the western port city of El Jadida within five years.
The liquefied gas will be carried to other sites through a projected 400 km-long gas pipeline to be connected to electric plants.
Morocco, the biggest importer of energy in the MENA region, has launched a vast project for renewable energies which aims at generating 42% of the country’s energy needs by 2025.
