San Francisco- Last month it was reported but never confirmed that King Mohammed VI was planning to make an official visit to Mauritania as part of an African tour that will also take him to other western African countries. As of today, the trip has not taken place.
Algeria is sensing that the relationship between Morocco and Mauritania is about to thaw after years of seemingly cold relations. As a result, tried unsuccessfully to put a stop to the Moroccan King’s eventual trip to Mauritania. This time, the Algerians miscalculated their move by soliciting the Mauritanian media to do their dirty work. Mauritania did not fall for Algeria’s hideous and malicious plan, and immediately deported an Algerian diplomatic officer stationed in the country and accused him of meddling in Mauritania’s internal affairs.
This Algerian officer influenced a Mauritanian media outlet to write that Mauritania is accusing Morocco at the UN of overwhelming their country with drugs from Morocco. If Mauritania did not responded to this evil plan, it would certainly have placed even more strain on the present relationship between Morocco and Mauritania.
Mauritania has always maintained a position of neutrality regarding the Sahara conflict imposed on Morocco by the Algerian regime. Mauritania has decided that it is in their national interest to keep its neutrality intact. It is for this reason that it reacted swiftly and decisively when it deported the Algerian diplomat.
Algeria did what it does best: they blame everything on everyone else, and freed itself from any wrongdoing. Many in the Algerian media are disgracefully blaming Morocco for Mauritania’s sovereign act. Algeria’s refusal to take responsibility for its deceptive action is not something new. It shamelessly responded to its failure by deporting a Mauritanian diplomat, calling it a reciprocity act.
Moroccan officials have not and hopefully will not comment on the incident. Morocco has no business getting involved in its neighbors’ quarrels.
One thing is certain: this incident shows the world how low Algeria will go to create obstacles for Morocco. They will stop at nothing to try to defeat their neighbor.
