Morocco’s Interior Ministry to Sue Akhab Al Yaoum Over ‘Unfounded Allegations’

Fez- Morocco's Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday, April 22 that it would sue the Arabic-language daily “Akhbar Al Yaoum” for posting an article based on “unfounded” allegations that “undermines the reputation of Morocco."

The Interior Ministry said on Wednesday it would initiate legal action against the Arabic daily Akhbar Al Yaoum, "in regard to the seriousness of the information contained in an article" published the day before in the newspaper.

The information relates to figures allegedly taken from a survey conducted by nine European media outlets which concerns illegal immigration in the Mediterranean.

The article entitled “3200 migrants drowned in the Moroccan coast,” reported that Mediterranean beaches have become the largest cemetery in the world for victims of illegal immigration.

In a new release, the Interior Ministry stated that it “categorically denies” this allegations , noting that "the content of the news story is unfounded," and that "the author seeks to undermine the reputation of Morocco by underestimating the initiatives and efforts taken by the public authorities, recognized by the international community, in the management of this matter."

Reacting to the statement of the Interior Ministry, The editor of Akhbar Al Yaoum, Taoufik Bouachrine, assured that "the information contained in the article is based on reports from the UN and the EU," adding that “this [legal] process affects the freedom of the press and the right to public information."

Bouachrine regretted that the Ministry did not contact the newspaper before announcing that it was taking legal action, adding that he is still open to discussion with the Ministry.

The editor “I think that the Ministry is not attacking us because of the article but because of other information,”Bouachrine said without specifying which information.
