According to a note sent to UN correspondents, Morocco’s Jamal Benomar, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Yemen, has expressed an interest in moving to another assignment after spending four years mediating between Yemeni factions.
In the note, the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon appreciated the "tireless efforts Mr. Benomar has made over the years to promote consensus and trust on a peaceful way forward in Yemen."
The source added that Mr. Benomar has spent the past four years working closely with the Yemenis to realize their legitimate aspirations for democratic change fulfilled.
On behalf of the UN's Secretary-General, Benomar brokered the Transition Agreement in November 2011, facilitated the successful conclusion of the National Dialogue Conference in January 2014 that took 10 months of deliberations, and mediated the Peace and National Partnership Agreement in September 2014.
Benomar chaired and facilitated all-inclusive negotiations for over two months to get the transition back on track. Unfortunately, the note added, this process was interrupted with the dramatic escalation of violence.
The UN said it would name a successor "in due course" and "spare no efforts to re-launch the peace process in order to get the political transition back on track."
Sources acquainted with the issue inside the United Nations told Morocco Word News came under pressure from Saudi Arabia after he voiced criticism over the Saudi military intervention in Yemen.
Benomar is also believed to have faced criticism from Saudi Arabia and GCC members for his "failure" to persuade Yemeni factions to attend peace talks.
