Rabat - Morocco will be among contributors with the majority of units that will form the newly unveiled joint Arab military force, according to Arab League sources quoted by Defense News, a website specializing in the defense industry.
"The majority of the units will be from Egypt, Morocco, with Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Jordan also providing troops while other countries will have smaller numbers included," the source told Defense News.
On March 25, the Arab Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh agreed to create a unified Arab command for a joint Arab military Force that "would be deployed at the request of any Arab nation facing national security threats and to combat terrorist groups."
According to the same source, the joint Arab military force will be based in Egypt and mainly comprise forces from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Morocco. The force will be led by a Saudi general whose name has not yet been revealed.
"The force would be made up of an air command, a naval command and a land operations command," the source said.
The source added that 500 to 1,000 will be members of the air command while 3,000 to 5,000 service members will be in the naval command and 34,000 to 35,000 will make up the land forces.
The Arab joint force will be financed by its respective countries, while oil-rich Arab Gulf countries are expected to cover the set-up and management costs of the force, the source said.
Jean-Marc Rickli, a lecturer at the Qatar National Defence College, told the Defense News website that Morocco, Jordan and the UAE's contribution to the joint force would consist of advanced Special Forces, precision-guided munitions or intelligence niche capabilities, while countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and possible Sudan would provide the bulk of the units.
The Arab Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt called for a meeting of Arab military chiefs of Staff to be held within a month in Cairo to finalize the agreement.
According to media reports, Kuwait, Egypt and Morocco are expected to lead the planning as the former, present and future chairs of the Arab League.
