Rabat - Zakia Khattabi, a Belgian MP of Moroccan origin, has been elected co-chair of Ecolo, a French-speaking political party in Belgium based on green politics. Thus, Khattabi becomes the first Belgian woman of Moroccan origin to head a political party in the country.

Khattabi has been elected by the General Assembly of the Écologistes Confédérés pour l'organisation de luttes originales Party jointly with Patrick Dupriez.

The pair collected 60 per cent of the vote against the team Chloé Deltour-Christos Doulkeridis who collected 38 per cent of the vote.

"Today, we can all together gather around a project," Zakia Khattabi told over a thousand of the Party sympathizers who gathered in Louvain-la-Neuve.

"It is not a question of dividing. Today, it is time to come together. It is together that we will make the party win," she added.

Khattabi (39) was elected a member of the parliament for the first time in 2009. She joined a parliamentary group representing the Brussels district where she rapidly rose to the limelight as one of the most prominent opposition figures in the Belgian political landscape.
