Rabat- Moroccan Chief of government, Abdelilah Benkirane, said that one of the secrets of his success was that he understood from the very beginning that there will be no future for his party, the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), if they conflicted with King Mohammed VI.
Speaking during the 10th annual Harvard Arab World Conference (HAWC) organized by the Harvard Arab Alumni Association in the capital Rabat, Benkirane said that the most important decision the sovereign had taken during the Arab Spring was to recognize the "real" results of the 25th November, 2011 parliamentary elections, which saw the Party of Justice and Development winning 107 seats in the parliament and also the right to form a coalition government in January 2012.
Benkirane told the audience during the opening of the HAWC that the kingdom was built on legitimacy and not only on power and authority, adding that King Mohammed VI was quick in responding to the demands for democratic reforms by appointing a commission of experts to draft a new constitution.
The Moroccan premier said that working hand in hand with the king has yielded positive results, stressing that the Party of Justice and Development “would either rule with the king or leave office, but not conflict with the king.”
In his speech, Benkirane relied on religious references to explain his relationship with the palace, saying that their relationship is that of "ease and not difficulty, obedience and not protest, and we obeyed his majesty the king," he added.
The 10th annual Harvard Arab World Conference was also marked by the presence of the king's cousin Moulay Ismail and Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan along with 300 leading professionals from the Middle East, Europe and the US.
