Rabat - In response to the communiqué issued on Wednesday by the city of Tangier in which it denied widely circulated rumors suggesting that it authorized a Shiite group called Al-Khat al-Rissali to operate in the city, Essam Al Hassani, a member of the aforementioned Shiite group said that they had not made any authorization request to the city of Tangier.
Speaking to various local media outlets, Al Hassani said that the Shiite institution called Al-Khat al-Rissali for Studies and Publishing did not make any request to the city of Tangier in order to authorize any activities or public gatherings to be organized by Al-Khat al-Rissali, adding that the group is “legal and it was licensed by the Commercial Court in Fez in 2014.”
"[It is] necessary for the public and observers in the country to distinguish between the legitimacy of the institution from a legal point of view, and the legitimacy of public assembly, Al Hassani was quoted by news website Hespress as saying.
"The local authorities have authority over public gatherings and not over the origin of the institution's legitimacy, which originated from the Commercial Court," he added.
Commenting on criticism from Moroccan Salafi groups about granting authorization for Al-Khat al-Rissali institution, Al Hassani said: "the Salafists are either aware of the methodology of the institution and ignore it, or they do not accept difference, or they really do not know and therefore, speak without knowledge."
