Paris- Morocan Researcher Molly Rajaâ Cherkaoui El Moursli has won L'Oreal/UNESCO for women in science Award, recognizing the top women in science around the world.
Professor of the Mohammed V - Agdal University in Rabat, Prof. Rajaâ Cherkaoui El Moursli is being honored for her key contribution to one of the greatest discoveries in physics: proof of the existence of the Higgs Boson, the particle responsible for the creation of mass in the universe.
Nicknamed research activist , she dedicates much of her time to raising the level of scientific research in her country and has been instrumental in improving Moroccan healthcare by creating the 1st master's degree in medical physics.
She is one of five women around the world being honored with the awards this year, which each come with a $139,633 grant. They will be presented at a ceremony held on March 18 at the Sorbonne.
From North America is Molly S. Shoichet, recognized for her approach to biomaterial development to regenerate damaged nerve tissue and the way she conceived a means to deliver medication to the spinal cord and brain. Yi Xie, from the Asia-Pacific region, was chosen for her work with new two-dimensional nanomaterials to convert heat or sunlight into electricity.
Representing Europe is Carol Robinson, acknowledged for having created a revolutionary method of studying protein function, particularly in cell membranes that play a crucial role in the human body.
From Latin America is Thaisa Storchi Bergmann, lauded for her research into black holes in the center of galaxies.
Fifteen female Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows have also been chosen for International Rising Talent Grants. They will take part in the awards ceremony as well.
