New York - Morocco’s anti-criminality approach is designed to address the root causes of crime said Morocco’s Inter-ministerial Delegate in Charge of Human Rights Mahjoub El Hiba on Wednesday in the UN headquarters in New York.

Speaking at a meeting initiated by Morocco, Italy, Mexico, Qatar and Thailand on the integration of crime prevention and criminal justice in the post-2015 development agenda, El Hiba provided an overview of Morocco’s approach to eradicate crime.

He said Morocco’s anti-crime approach emphasizes on human development, social solidarity and addressing delinquency.

The Moroccan approach attaches due attention to the social dimension which represents 54% of the state budget in 2012 compared to an average 41% during the 1990s, he said.

He also shed light on Morocco’s efforts to reform the judiciary and installing a penal justice system based on prevention and the respect for the values of equity and human rights in a way that is geared to strengthen human security.

On the same occasion, El Hiba highlighted Morocco’s international commitment to combating transnational organized crime including all kinds of trafficking, separatist movements and terrorism, notably in the Sahel and Africa.
