Taroudante- The Saudi Ministry of Employment has provided a new list of countries from where families can hire domestic workers and employees.
Even though the list also included Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt, Morocco, which has been a source of employees for several years, was the only country rejected by Saudi wives on the grounds that its women are “too beautiful” for domestic work.
Some Saudi wives have rejected the ministry’s decision to include Morocco and reportedly “will not allow housemaids from Morocco and Chile into their houses on the grounds that they are beautiful and not as patient as Asian maids,” according to Emirates247.
The same source quoted a domestic workers' agent in the Kingdom as saying, “he had already been contacted by women asking him to ensure maids arriving from Morocco or Chile are not beautiful.”
“Some wives have already contacted us to say that if their husbands want maids from Chile or Morocco, they must first see the maids before accepting them. Their main condition was that these maids should not be pretty,” said Eid Abu Fahd, director of a maids' hiring office in the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah.
In its statement, the ministry has also separated jobs according to gender.
Despite the negative stereotypes and debasing labels assigned to Moroccan women living in the gulf countries, such as “husbands takers” and “sex workers”, many women are nobly earning a decent living in the Gulf countries, while others have been victims of work contract traffickers.
Many foreign workers in Gulf countries are still working under the sponsorship system known as Kafala, which requires foreign workers to have local sponsors. This rigidly binds migrants to their employers, enabling the latter to commit abuses, while preventing workers from changing jobs or leaving the country.
Both the International Labor Organization (ILO) and Human Rights Watch have previously criticized the sponsorship system applicable in the Gulf States and considered it comparable to slavery.
