Taroudante- Driss Lachgar, the Secretary General of the opposition socialist party USFP, called for the decriminalization of abortion and true equality between men and women at the Casablanca Book Fair on Friday.

During an event At the Book Fair hosted on February 22 by the National Council of Human Rights (CNDH), Driss Lachgar gave his opinion on several social issues, including abortion, child marriage, and polygamy.

"The USFP supports the decriminalization of abortion, but in certain conditions," said Driss Lachgar.

The USFP Secretary General said, "abortion is the most fitting solution to a societal problem," which is "rape and unwanted pregnancies."

By standing for the decriminalization of abortion, Lachgar added his voice to the likes of Nabil Benabdallah and Mohand Laenser, Secretaries General of the PPS and MP, respectively.

Lachgar said that his party has a long history of defending women's causes and rights.

Lachgar is also against child marriage and polygamy, which he says must be "completely banned."

Last year, he called for a national debate to reconsider the inheritance rights of women, which, according to Islamic legislation, get half what men receive upon the death of their parents.

Following Lachgar’s controversial statements, Abdelhamid Abounaim, a Moroccan Salafist sheikh, accused him of “apostasy”.
