Rabat - More than 32,000 jobs were lost in Morocco’s textile and leather industries sectors between 2013 and 2014, according to the High Commissioner for Planning (HCP).

Despite a recovery in exports and an improvement of 1.2 % of the added value of the sector, it is unlikely that the sector will reboot immediately and create job opportunities, according to the same source.

In a note on employment and exports within the sector, the HCP said that these losses were mainly the result of a 14% reduction of the workforce in textiles; 4.6% in clothing and 8.6% in shoes making.

The sector of textiles and leather had previously lost about 119,000 jobs between 2008 and 2014.

These performances brought the contribution of external sales of the textiles and leather sectors to 16.7% of total exports in 2014, compared to an average of 17.6% over the past four years and 23.4% between 2007 and 2010.

According to the same source, 70% of employees have no medical coverage and are mainly seasonal workers, and more than 3 out of 5 employees who work in the industry do not have an employment contract.
