Rabat - Around 400 Sahrawi people who fled from the Algeria-based Tindouf camps are trying to cross into Morocco from neighboring Mauritania, said Omar Bouaida, a deputy from the National Rally of Independents Party in a letter sent to the Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar, whose content has been reported by news website le360 on Thursday.
They are currently gathering in front of the Moroccan consulate in Mauritania’s second largest city, Nouadhibou.
Omar Bouaida said in the letter that many Sahrawis who escaped from the Tindouf camps have expressed desire to return to Morocco. He added that the Moroccan consul in Nouadhibou is not speeding up the process of granting visas, calling on Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar to urgently intervene to solve this issue.
Mbarka Bouaida, Minister delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, told Moroccan second channel 2M on Wednesday that there are about 5,000 Sahrawi people in Mauritania who are seeking to return to Morocco.
“We will not cease asking Christopher Ross (UN Special Envoy to the Western Sahara) a census of the population in the Tindouf camps,” she said.
“With regard to international law, Algeria is involved in the conflict because the camps are located on its territory. In addition, that country decides on behalf of the separatists,” She noted.
