Rabat - A man was arrested in Rabat this week after he tried to bribe a police officer.
According to Al Massae daily newspaper, the policeman pulled over the man for talking on the phone while driving.
The man attempted to bribe the law enforcement officer near Al Joulan square in the capital Rabat to avoid penalties for traffic law infringements, the source added.
The policeman was reportedly filming the moment when he was offered a bribe from the driver.
After he notified his superiors about the case, the policeman was given direct instruction to arrest the driver and escort him to the police station for legal procedure.
Following the increase in videos posted on social media platforms showing “corrupt” police officers receiving bribes from drivers, the Moroccan police are working overtime to improve their image by acting more strictly with citizens who offer to pay bribes in return for overlooking committed infractions.
The General Directorate of National Security has circulated a memo urging security forces to crack down on all practices that harm the credibility of the law enforcement officials.
The memo aims to entrench a culture of transparency and professional integrity among security forces and to strengthen governance values.
