Rabat - Numerous Egyptian media outlets reportedly were surprised to see the shift in the Moroccan position regarding the political establishment in Egypt.

On Thursday, the two Moroccan state-owned channels 2m and Al Aoula aired special reports on Egypt questioning the legitimacy of El Sisis regime, referring to ELSisi as “the leader of the military coup,” rather than president of Egypt.

In their search for possible justifications for the recent shift in the Moroccan-Egyptian relations, Al Masry Al Yaoum newspaper speculated that the Moroccan monarch's attendance at a tea party at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on December 27th was the reason behind the recent shift in Morocco's position.

The newspaper added that in addition to Mohammed VI's visit to Turkey, the position with respect to what is happening in Egypt of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), the leader of the governmental coalition in Morocco, might also be a possible explanation for the shift in the Moroccan-Egyptian relations.

While King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to Abdel Fattah El Sisi upon his election as president of the Arab Republic of Egypt, today Moroccos official channels are launching a media attack on El Sisis regime. This apparent reversal is due to the last series of attacks on Moroccoin the Egyptian media.

An Egyptian anchor made a comment this week describing Morocco as a land of sorcery. It is the latest in an Egyptian campaign of misinformation and insults targeting the Kingdom.

Before this incident, an Egyptian female television presenter stated that Morocco ranks among the highest countries with HIV infections. She went on to say that the Kingdom has “an economy based on prostitution revenues.”

More recently, Secretary General of the Fatwa at Al-Azhar Mosque, the highest religious authority in Egypt, nullified King Mohammeds celebration of the Eid Al Adha. Earlier, an Egyptian actor made racist remarks about Moroccans, targeting the Moroccan Jewish community in particular.
