Rabat -The torrential rains that hit southern Morocco in the last couple weeks continue to claim more lives.
Citing Agence France Press, the second Moroccan channel 2M said that eleven people were killed due to flooding in southern Morocco. These new victims in addition to the 36 people who had lost their lives last week will raise the death toll to 47 confirmed deaths.
Southern Morocco witnessed record rainfall last week. In Agadir, for example, more than 250 mm of rainfall was recorded, while Guelmim and its surroundings, one of the worst affected areas, have experienced major flooding and devastation.
According to media reports, the damage could amount to several hundred million euros, mainly because of blocked roads, destroyed homes and damaged electricity networks.
More than 250 villages are reported to be in complete isolation. An airlift has been set up between Guelmim and Sidi Ifni to help the affected populations.
