Rabat- The House of Representatives Committee of Foreign Affairs approved on Monday a law supporting military cooperation between Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.
The law allows the Moroccan government to provide military, security, and logistical support to the United Arab Emirates to help them fight terrorism.
This agreement, which aims at enhancing cooperation in the military, security, and defense spheres, was signed in Rabat in May 2006. However, the threat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) precipitated its referral to Parliament for approval.
The agreement, signed by the Moroccan National Defense and the General Command of the UAE Armed Forces, calls for the creation of a joint military cooperation committee, consisting of representatives from both countries, which will define the appropriate tools for the agreement’s implementation.
The agreement also outlines other areas of cooperation between the two countries, including security and defense policy, common studies and scientific research in the military industry, humanitarian and peacekeeping operations, and disaster relief training.
Last October, Morocco had pledged its “active support” to the UAE’s fight against terrorism and the preservation of regional and international peace and stability.
“This action comes to reinforce long-standing security and military cooperation with Gulf countries, particularly the UAE, which was given new impetus in 2011 after the signing of a strategic partnership agreement between Morocco and several member-countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),” Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Salaheddine Mezouar explained at the time.
