Rabat- The Emirati-Moroccan company for industry and distribution (EMID), a subsidiary of Al Rashideen international Holding Company, will set up a tobacco production unit.

Established in 2013, EMID has obtained the permission of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to build a 6 hectares plant near Tangier Med port, which will include four production lines.

According to sources cited by La Vie Eco, the majority of the products that will be manufactured in the plant will be destined for export. This is also the reason why the Rabat-based company has chosen to locate its plant in the northern region of the kingdom.

With EMID's move La Société Marocaine des Tabacs (SMT), a subsidiary of Imperial Tobacco Group will no longer has the monopoly over cigarette manufacturing in Morocco.

The same source added that 100% of the raw material used in the production will be imported since all tobacco growers are bound by an exclusive contract with the SMT which funds their crops.

The products that will be manufactured in the unit are said to belong to the Philip Morris group, known for its flagship brand Marlboro.
