Rabat- The French multinational retailer Carrefour was condemned Thursday by the industrial tribunal of Lyon for having fired a Moroccan veiled cashier in 2010.
The Board of “Prud'hommes” in Lyon ordered Carrefour to pay 10,000 euros in compensation to Hafida Treille, of Moroccan origins, who was fired after refusing to take off her veil.
The judges said that Carrefour dismissed the veiled cashier"withoutreal cause.”
However, the French retailer said that the act of the employee in question "violated" the rules of the company, which states that employees in contact with customers have no right to wear or show any ostentatious political, religious or trade union signs.
The 44 years old Carrefour’s ex-cashier was fired after returning from a parental leave.
According to AFP, HaoudaHathroubi, the counsel of theformeremployee, said that the principle of "absolute neutrality" rules enacted in the Company’s code contradict with religious freedom, which is enshrined in French constitution and the European Court of Human Rights
