Taroudant- With high-tech monitoring systems installed in supermarkets of the kingdom, getting out unnoticed with products without paying for them may be very challenging, yet Morocco ranks third in shoplifting worldwide after India and Russia, according to lavieeco.
According to the results of the study 2012/2013 Global Retail Theft Barometer, prepared by the security specialist Checkpoint Systems, Morocco is ranked for the second consecutive year in third place for shoplifting, employee theft and fraud behind India and Russia.
Because of this phenomenon, Morocco retailers have suffered a loss of 1.74% of their total turnover in 2012 against 1.62% in 2011.
The same source said that operators confirm that staff are responsible for the largest number of thefts.
"In the retail sector, it is around 1.4%," said a trader, confirming that the sector in 2012 cost a total loss of 249 million dirhams for 21 billion dirhams in sales.
"At Carrefour, the rate of shrinkage is still lower than the industry average," said Laissaoui Riyadh, Deputy Director General of the company.
The retail chain has seen an average markdown rates by 0.5% in the financial year 2013, about 30 million dirhams loss for a turnover of 6 billion dirhams.
