Cairo - New indirect talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators aimed at finding a long-term solution to the war on Gaza begun in Cairo, reported Egyptian state media.

The fresh discussions come amid a new three-day ceasefire agreed between Israel and Hamas, as the Palestinian death toll nears 2000, mainly civilians.

Israel has lost 64 soldiers and three civilians, while heavy losses among civilians and the destruction of thousands of homes in Gaza have drawn international condemnation.

Hamas is demanding an end to Israeli blockades of the Gaza Strip and opening of a seaport in the enclave, while Israel says these demands should be dealt with only in any future talks on a permanent peace agreement.

Egypt's Foreign Ministry has urged both sides to work toward "a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire agreement".
