Tinjedad, Morocco- 16 days after Israel launched its military attacks on Gaza, 860 people were killed and more than 5,700 were injured, according to Al Jazeera.

On Friday only 76 people were killed among whom 6 people in the West Bank.

In spite of the mounting outrage expressed by the international public opinion against the Israeli onslaught on and indiscriminate killing of Palestinians, the United Nations has proved unable to compel Israel, the occupying power, to halt its military operations, and hold it to account for the crimes it is perpetrating against the Palestinians.

To give a legal cover to its attacks on Gaza, Israel uses the argument of self-defense. The same argument was used by Israel during its war on Gaza Between late December 2008 and mid-January 2009. But its argument was debunked by the fact-finding commission established by the United Nations on April 2009 to investigate international human rights and humanitarian law violations related to the Israeli war on the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

The report of the fact-finding commission, led by former South African Constitutional Court justice, Richard Goldstone, revealed that the Israeli government used the argument of self-defense to target the whole population of Gaza.

“While the Israeli Government has sought to portray its operations as essentially a response to rocket attacks in the exercise of its right of self defence, the Mission considers the plan to have been directed, at least in part, at a different target: the people of Gaza as a whole,” said the report.

Israel has been subjecting the Gaza Strip to an illegal and inhuman siege since 2006, following the election of Hamas.
