Moroccan Voices- Bring Back Our Girls

By Buqkie Jedidiah

Kenitra - I am a Nigerian studying at the Faculties of letters and Humanities in the University of Ibn Tofail, Kenitra. I have been having classes with my Moroccan friends for quite a while, and luckily for us, this semester we are taking a course on World religion. I thought about the situation of my country in comparison to what my professor has been teaching us concerning Islam. Indeed, Islam is a religion of peace and Allah does not support terrorism.

Located in the western coast of Africa, Nigeria is the most populous African country, extremely rich in natural resources. Its economy in 2014 is considered the largest in Africa, according to BBC. Nigeria is divided between the Muslims and the Christians population, with Muslims situated in the North and the south east region of the country and Christians in the Southern and central region of the country. Boko Haram is an Islamic sect in Nigeria, whose objective is to establish a pure Islamic rule under the sharia law by any possible means which includes violence, putting a stop to any form of westernization in the country.

Boko Haram means that “Western Education is a sin.” This group has attacked churches, government houses, police stations, schools and many more. They are extremely dangerous as they deal with explosive devices and all sort of suicidal weapons. They don’t seem to even care about the harm they are causing to families, as well as to the country as a whole.

Last April 15, these Islamic extremist bombarded a secondary school in Borno state, Nigeria and kidnapped over 200 girls. They released a video and claimed responsibility for the abduction. Their leader said confidently that he was going to sell these girls and claimed that Allah has sent him.

This is contradictory to what I have learnt in Morocco as I live in an Islamic country known for its tolerance and fight against all forms of terrorism. This was why I, together with my Moroccan friends, decided to join the protest against the violence, terrorism and kidnap in Nigeria.

We want our voices to be heard. We crave the indulgence of the whole world and other Islamic countries to join in the protest against this evil and misuse of the name of Allah and to help in bringing back the girls alive and in good state back to their families.
