New York (UN) - The UN Security Council deemed, on Tuesday, that a mutually-acceptable political solution to the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara and a reinforced cooperation within the Arab Maghreb Union will contribute to stability in the Sahel region.
Reaching a political solution to the long-running dispute and a reinforced cooperation between the member states of the Arab Maghreb Union will contribute to the stability and security in the Sahel region, said the fifteen member states in resolution 2152, adopted unanimously and extending for one year the MINURSO mandate. This is the second time that the UNSC links the settlement of the artificial conflict to the crisis in the Sahel region. The UN has repeatedly warned against insecurity in the region and activities by terrorist groups which actively recruit to strengthen their presence and armory.
