France plays down row with Algeria over Hollande joke

Taroudant, Morocco - France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a warning on April 15 advising its citizens to avoid traveling to some regions of Algeria because of "the persistence of a high risk of terrorism."

"The utmost caution is required for all of our citizens residing in Algeria or planning to go there," and "we strongly advise our citizens not to travel Algria, especially to the south and east of the country," said the French Foreign Ministry on its website.

"In the context of problems that continue for several months in the city of Ghardaia and its surroundings, the utmost caution is needed in this area, where travel is not recommended except for compelling reason,” the same source added.

The French government calls on its citizens residing or travelling to Algeria to inform the Crisis Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development by registering on the website "Ariane" for more security information.

With Algeria's elections taking place on Thursday, the French Foreign ministry advised its citizens to keep a distance from events or gatherings in the country.

Algerians will cast their ballots in a presidential election that the ailing 77-year-old Abdel-Aziz Bouteflika is expected to win.
